Over the course of several months last school year, McManus Middle School students and staff collected plastic caps and lids to be recycled. Now they are being rewarded for their hard work.

The school collected over 2,000 pounds of caps and lids from all kinds of plastic containers and had them turned into four park benches and two picnic tables that now sit next to the school garden for everyone to enjoy. The work was done by Green Tree Plastics of Evansville, IN.

The initiative was headed by teacher Nicole Zambell, whose class wanted to do something to make a difference after learning about the affects plastic trash is having on the world’s oceans. History teacher Fred Maresco volunteered to travel to Indiana over the summer to pick up the benches and tables, which needed to be driven back and assembled.
