The weather was perfect on May 9, 2017. There was a cool, light breeze, and lots of bright sunshine for the 2017 Police Unity Tour. Excitement and anticipation was in the air as students, faculty and staff of Linden Public School No. 1 and Linden High School greeted members of the Linden Police Department “Team Linden” who participated in the 2017 Police Unity Tour. Ten Linden Police Officers participated in the Police Unity Tour to raise awareness for the more than 21,000 Law Enforcement Officers who died in the line of duty. “Team Linden” rides with Chapter 37 of the tour, which always begins at the World Trade Center in honor of the 72 officers who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
As “Team Linden” and the entire Police Unity Tour made their entrance onto Wood Avenue, leading the way was a motorcade of motorcycles with sirens blaring, lights flashing, cheers, and a standing ovation from Linden School No. 1. Setting the mood, School No. 1 students waved handmade American flags, held large banners welcoming “Team Linden” and the entire tour of bikers. The Police Unity Tour gave High-5’s as the song “Proud to Be an American” was heard playing in the background. Over 350 riders and support personnel were greeted by members of the Linden Police and Fire Departments, the Linden High School Marching Band, Linden High School Naval Junior Reserve Training Core (NJROTC), and dozens of students and supporters as they entered the Raymond Wood Bauer Promenade. The Linden High School Madrigal Singers, a vocal a cappella ensemble, performed the National Anthem for the Police Unity Tour and especially for our Heroes of Linden.
Linden Police Officers Angel Padilla, Peter Hammer, David Guzman and Mark Kahana were presented with the Police Unity Tour Medal of Valor for their actions leading to the arrest of Ahmad Rahami on September 19, 2016.
“Team Linden” and the entire Police Unity Tour brought smiles to the students of Linden and patriotism to the streets of Linden. The spirit of gratitude from Linden Public Schools and the entire City of Linden was felt by the Police Unity Tour and especially by “Team Linden” who rode for those who gave their lives for the American way of life.
