Linden Firefighter Anthony Holland showing students at School No. 10 not to be afraid of him in his full gear. The visit was one of several the Linden Fire Department made to Linden Public Schools for Fire Prevention Month.

The Linden Fire Department is paying visits to the city’s elementary schools in October for Fire Prevention Month.

Firefighters stress to students the importance of not playing with fire and making sure they have smoke detectors in their homes. They show the children smoke detectors and let them hear what the alarm sounds like. They stressed to the kids that if they hear that sound, everyone should get out of the house.

Firefighters also show children what they look like in their full gear – with a helmet, tank and air mask — so that young children won’t be afraid of them and try to hide during a fire. The kids also got a chance to work the fire hose.

The Fire Department is holding Fire Prevention Night this Friday, 5 to 8 p.m., in front of City Hall.
