Myles J. McManus Middle School, like all public education, faces many challenges brought upon by the No Child Left Behind legislation and its regulations. All of our teachers are highly qualified in their field of endeavor and are highly motivated to face these challenges.Lessons are prepared which specifically target state mandated objectives. The classes are taught in an environment which is structured, friendly and nurturing. Parents are kept abreast of what transpires in school by the PTA Newsletter and by accessing the Genesis website which enable them to check on student achievements and assignments. Our teachers keep in close contact with parents by phone calls, e-mails and interim reports. Parents are always welcome to make an appointment through the Guidance Department to discuss any concerns. McManus is part of the Consortium for Achievement in Mathematics and Science. As part of the endeavor, Pre-Algebra and Algebra have been incorporated into the seventh and eighth grade curriculums. After School Tutoring is offered November through April. This program assists students with homework and other class assignments. School Social Workers and Invention and Referral Services Committees address the affective needs of students and parents. McManus Middle School is also affiliated with the New Jersey Middle School Peer Leadership Initiative. Business/School Partnerships and programs with Merck, the DEA, National Guard, Veterans against Drug Use and local authorities also assist our school youth. Our language arts and social studies curriculum utilizes a balanced literacy model. Language Arts and Social Studies teachers have created cross curricular thematic units. The students are engaged in holistic experiences in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening to create one integrated model that addresses all the facets of literacy in the Language Arts and Social Studies classrooms. We are excited about our clubs, performance groups and athletic programs. Special school-wide programs stress integration of curricular areas as evident in the Science Fair. Several departments such as Art, Technology and Language Arts collaborate in productions by the Drama Club to encourage practiced skills learned in the classroom. To add exposure to varied learning experiences, classes are rotated through a series of marking period courses in Music, Art, Computers, and Foreign Languages. Our Gateway to Technology program incorporates national Mathematic, Science, and Technology standards and seeks to motivate and excite students while solving every day problems. The Builder’s Club works with different charitable organizations and assists with their fundraising efforts. In previous years, students have raised money for St. Jude’s Research Hospital, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Popcorn Park Zoo. The Builder’s Club is affiliated with the Linden Kiwanis Club. The Diversity Club meets weekly to discuss and explore differences between people and cultures. Eighth grade students who excel academically are invited to join our Junior National Honor Society. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Student Council. Elections are held in October for students who are committed to working hard, attending meetings, running small committees and participating in school sponsored events. In order to foster positive behavior in the school, McManus Middle School is proud to be part of the Positive Behavior Support in Schools initiative. PBSIS is a partnership between the NJ State Department of Education and the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The project’s purpose is to assist our school in creating a positive learning environment which leads to a decrease in office discipline referrals and increased opportunities for all pupils to learn. We begin the school year with a kick off event where all students are taught the building expectations and the Viking Code of Conduct: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. Our student and staff PBSIS team has created a school wide reward and recognition system where students who are demonstrating positive behaviors and following the Viking Code receive a Viking voucher that they can enter into a weekly and monthly raffle. Teachers are also rewarded for promoting positive behaviors among students. PBSIS promotes socially desired behaviors using positive, proactive and practical interventions. McManus offers a variety of events and activities that promote positive behaviors throughout the school year: community service projects, teacher for the day contest, reverse Viking Voucher days, school spirit week, pep rallies and many more. The PBSIS team works closely with the Intervention and Referral Services Team to assist with providing student support. Visit the website for further information: www.njpbs.org. We educate our students about the seriousness of bullying and harassment in school. McManus students are held accountable and face serious consequences for taking part in any unacceptable behavior towards another student or faculty member. Classroom teachers, social workers and guidance counselors incorporate activities into daily lesson plans to help students handle situations which occur during everyday life. A strengthening family program is offered in the evenings as a supplemental service to our parents. Students and staff are enthusiastic and take pride in their work. Teachers are using many instructional strategies that encourage collaboration and full student participation. McManus Middle School continues to develop ideas to share instruction via Distance Learning Technology. The quality of students writing and projects reflect the use of cooperative learning strategies that call for higher level creative thinking. |
