Joseph E. Soehl Middle School continues to provide its students with a nurturing environment so they may achieve academic and social growth as they prepare to enter the high school. It is our goal to provide every student with the groundwork necessary to achieve maximum potential throughout their lives.

The faculty strives to keep pace with the latest educational innovations by participating in professional development activities that are geared toward improving student performance. The Science inquiry-based curriculum is sponsored by Merck Corporation and is hands-on in its method of delivery. Mathematics courses are double period classes for most students. The fifth and sixth grade curriculum is Everyday Math; seventh grade introduces Pre-Algebra, with reinforcement and completion of the course being delivered in the eighth grade. Additionally, advanced students pursue a full year of Algebra in the eighth grade. The Language Arts curriculum is presented during a double period, and is integrated in nature. The course follows the LEADS model and includes a strong emphasis on reading and writing analysis. The Social Studies curriculum is also a LEADS model course and allows teachers and students to incorporate inter-disciplinary projects with both the Science and Language Arts departments.

Technology at Soehl has been greatly expanded with every room being equipped with internet access, along with having at least three personal computers available for use. The Distance Learning Program has grown throughout the years and affords students the opportunity to participate in videoconferences involving other institutions of learning. The Interactive TV program provides shared instruction lessons with schools within the district, or as distant as foreign countries. The school’s wireless laptop carts can be transported from room to room, thus making it possible for a class of individuals to take advantage of educational internet offerings.

Student academic and social concerns are addressed through Guidance Counselors, Social Workers and an Intervention and Referral Services Program. These services work closely with students, parents, community agencies and staff and may address educational, vocational, personal or social concerns. Open discussions and assemblies are scheduled throughout the year to address issues such as bullying/teasing, substance abuse prevention and gang involvement. Soehl has also been awarded (for the second time) a $500,000 annual grant for the next five years for our 21st Century Community Learning Center. This program provides after school services for grades five through eight. The 21st Century program coordinates homework assistance, enrichment classes, recreational opportunities, community service and parent outreach programs. Soehl Middle School also participates in the Positive Behavior Support In Schools (PBSIS) program in order to encourage students to make positive choices throughout the school day.

The Soehl Middle School community continues to pursue its goals of academic excellence and positive behavioral growth. Faculty, administrators and supervisors strive to align the curriculum with the NJ Core Curriculum Standards. Through collaboration with our students and their families we will continue to move in the right direction, while  offering a nurturing, positive environment in which our students can learn and grow.
