Welcome to School No. 2, where our Tigers R.O.A.R.S.

As Principal, I am dedicated to cultivating an inclusive, caring, and supportive school community. Part of my leadership is to carry out establishing a positive community of learners where everyone feels welcomed and involved.  Again, Welcome to School No. 2, a wonderful learning community.

I am an instructional leader who works as a team player with all stakeholders to keep the focus on what is best for children. I have high expectations for myself and take accountability for my actions by “acting what I model.”  My goal is to advocate for children by being pro-active and to lead with integrity, communicate effectively, and build up leaders within the building.

The administration of School No. 2 has established a nurturing environment at school that is built upon positive relationships among students and teachers. It has been extremely effective because we have created ways for administrators, peers, and parents to have positive interactions with one another in and out of the classroom.   We look forward to all parents joining our PTA (Parent-Teacher-Association.)  We value your active involvement.

School No. 2 utilizes Positive Behavior Supports in Schools (PBSIS), an initiative that assists schools in building the capacity to support social behavioral needs of all students. PBSIS focuses on core prevention practices that help our students make good behavioral choices.  Throughout the school year, we conduct activities and events that promote team building and recognition of positive behaviors in school and on the school bus.  It has become integrated into every aspect of our building, including how we do our student of the month, weekly and monthly rewards, as well as discipline and character education.  Our Principles of character are: Responsibility, Owning Choices, Aiming to be the best, Respect, and Safety.

Our School No. 2 Motto that we recite every day is:

My Tiger R.O.A.R.S. When I am:

Responsible for my behavior,

Own my choices

Aim to be my best,

Respect myself and others to be

Safe at School No. 2

Now let’s Roar

Studies have shown that students can be successful when they have the right effort, attitude, and behavior regardless of their learning ability. On a daily basis, I work with faculty and staff to advance your child’s social, personal, and academic development in a supportive and safe learning environment. All of our teachers are professionals and deliver high quality instruction to meet the student’s individual needs. Here is one of my favorite quotes from South Africa’s past President Nelson Mandela;

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

My hope is that this quote becomes embedded within each of our students. Showcased on one of our stairwell steps, is the question, “What steps are you taking to change the world?”  The answers are limitless and we teach our students to step into it.  Whether they are committed to persevering, taking risks, determined to have the confidence to believe in themselves, being accountable and focused, realizing they are responsible for their learning or are looking within for inner strength so they can conquer this world, I am extremely proud that the root of their elementary teaching will come from stepping in and out of School No. 2.  I couldn’t be prouder, and that is how our Tigers ROARS!

Thank you being an active participant of supporting our children to be accountable for their learning.

Educationally yours,

Atiya Y. Perkins
