School #2 offers a part-time “pull out” bilingual resource room for Spanish-speaking students in grades 1 through 5. For Kindergarten students, a “push in” model is followed in collaboration with the Tools of the Mind program.

Instruction is delivered by a certified Bilingual Education teacher with the assistance of two highly qualified instructional aides. The bilingual teacher provides each student with a minimum of one period of developmental reading instruction and support in mathematics, which is in addition to their regular ESL instruction. Students in the Bilingual Spanish program also receive a minimum of 40 minutes of instruction on ESL each day from a highly qualified ESL teacher.

The certified ESL teacher utilizes a combination of the “push in” and “pull out” models to offer students a daily developmental second-language program based on students’ needs. In addition to providing small-group literacy support in the mainstream classroom during the Language Arts block, the ESL teacher also pulls students into a small-group instruction setting according to grade and proficiency level. During this time, the ESL teacher follows a curriculum based on the WIDA standards and provides instruction to strengthen the students’ language in all the four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, the ESL teacher may pull students for an additional thirty minutes of instruction as needed.

The ESL students are provided with the same material as the general education students. In addition, the ESL teachers may use the following materials: The Trophies ESL Kit, ELL Library, and the Rigby On the Way to English Program.
