Welcome to Myles J. McManus Middle School (MMS)

As Principal, I am dedicated to cultivating an inclusive, caring, and supportive school community.  Part of my leadership is to carry out establishing a positive community of learners where everyone feels welcomed and involved. Again, Welcome to McManus Middle School, a wonderful learning community.

I am an instructional leader who works as a team player with all stakeholders to keep the focus on what is best for children. I have high expectations for myself and take accountability for my actions by “acting what I model.”  My goal is to advocate for children by being pro-active and to lead with integrity, communicate effectively, and build up leaders within the building.

McManus is a nurturing environment that is built upon positive relationships among students and teachers.  We serve a diverse student population in grades 6 – 8.  We work with every child to instill organizational skills while promoting high academic and social standards.  We are committed to creating ways for administrators, peers, and parents to have positive interactions with one another in and out of the classroom.   We value your involvement.  With active parent participation, we work to make each day a positive experience for your student here at McManus.  We look forward to all parents joining our PTA (Parent-Teacher-Association.)

We have over 101 faculty and staff members.  All of our teachers at each grade level are professionals.  Theywork together as a team to create balanced interdisciplinary educational opportunities, while addressing the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.  Continuing our Technology One-To-One program, all of our students and teachers are equipped with Apple iPads on a daily basis to enhance learning in and out of the classroom.

The guidance department at McManus is made up of dedicated counselors and social workers who are uniquely trained in child and adolescent development, learning strategies, self-management and social skills. They implement a school counseling program to support students through this important developmental period in their lives.  They are all available to assist students and their families and is often the first place students and parents turn when they need answers to questions or assistance with addressing the students, the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for academic, career and social/emotional development.

McManus utilizes Positive Behavior Supports in Schools (PBSIS), an initiative that assists schools in building the capacity to support social behavioral needs of all students.  PBSIS focuses on core prevention practices that help our students make good behavioral choices.  Throughout the school year, we conduct activities and events that promote team building and recognition of positive behaviors.  It has become integrated into our daily school life as students are excited to earn their Tiger stripes(points) for rewards over the course of the school year.  Our program also promotes character education.

Studies have shown that students can be successful when they have the right effort, attitude, and behavior regardless of their learning ability. I work with faculty and staff to advance your child’s social, personal, and academic development in a supportive and safe learning environment.  Here is one of my favorite quotes from South Africa’s past President Nelson Mandela;

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

My hope is that this quote becomes embedded within each of our students.

Thank you being an active participant of supporting our children to be accountable for their learning.

Educationally yours,

Atiya Y. Perkins
