On Monday December 15th students in the Italian Exchange program had the pleasure of visiting the town of Pompeii. This ancient Roman city, near modern Naples, is not far where students are staying in the town of Salerno. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 feet of ash and pumice after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pompeii has been a tourist destination for over 250 years and has even been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 2.5 million visitors every year. Students enjoyed every minute of touring this living museum and were able to experience what life may have been like in ancient Roman times.
